John Herring

Salford born John Herring has been compared to the likes of Paul Heaton, John Martyn, Roddy Frame and The Smiths. Good company to keep as a singer/songwriter and combined with lyrics and melodies which take you down urban street scenes this gentleman has a habit of bringing audiences to a complete hush... in a good way! Backed by a talented 4-piece band the live experience has been quoted as being better than the CD...

'Tales From a Northern City' represents the rise to prominence of one of the region's most creative and talented songwriting talents. 9/10. Mike Roberts; Whisperin' & Hollerin'

Really, really love his work. Sam Walker; BBC Radio Manchester Introducing

There is something of Paul Heaton - now an adopted Manc - about Herring's music, occasional nods in the direction of such venerable English singer-songwriters as Richard Thompson and a whiff of unplugged Smiths. Paul Taylor; City Life

The Black Knights

Salford duo, The Black Knights, made up of Thomas Richard Pickford III and Gary L Hope, know how to make a depraved and sleazy sound the most endearing thing around. Think the White Stripes meet Johnny Cash with a bit of Prince ambiguity and you might be coming somewhere near to this unique and transfixing sound.

Sandbox

It's easy to compare Sandbox to a variety of female fronted guitar bands but you'd be wrong to do so. Rather, Sandbox flutter their eyelids at you and make you believe that you're the only one in the room. They seduce you with their melodies - the musical equivalent of being chatted up at the jukebox - an before you know it; you're writing your mobile number on the back of a beer mat.

Death to the Strange

Death to the Strange fuse lyric-driven, folky tunes with ambient electronic sounds and effects. With instrumentation tailored to each tune, the band are looking to take in and build on all the interesting music out there. Live, the band has been creating a stir with full-on; beat driven tunes mixed in with experimental acoustic pieces.

Kingfishers Catch Fire

A touch of electro-pop, a touch of Arcade Fire and a touch of Ian Curtis mix it together with some great melodies and you may just about capture part of the recipe which inspires Kingfishers Catch Fire. They've been a three piece for some time but have now expanded to include a drummer and a bass player. Be one of the first to take in this exciting new 5-piece!

"As the night continues, so does the theatre and one act I've not encountered before are the splendid KINGFISHERS CATCH FIRE, a boy / girl / boy trio, who have the female on guitar, one smart looking fellow on keyboards and a singer who is both a poet, raconteur and emotionally flamboyant performer. Each nugget of a song was fitted out with retro-synth sounds and the twisted curl of a twangy but slightly distorted guitar - elaborate yet simple. This comes across with the delivery of Marc Almond (or at least the passion), as the bobbing digital beats mix in a light conversion of Electro Clash battling it out with an orchestral sci-fi ambition. This is an act I'd very much wish to encounter yet again." Manchester Music
