BAD UNCLE AT UNITED REFORMED CHURCH
Bad Uncle was born in 2007, our aim has always been to bring an eclectic array of sounds and smells to grotty venues in Manchester (and Salford) for as minimal crunch as we can give. Our first show with Honey Ride me a Goat, Kylie Minoise, Cold Ones, Stuckometer and CooperJones could be taken as a blueprint for our future endeavours.
There have been robberies, broken PA's and bad pasta along the way but the enjoyment of putting on bands we love to 1 or 100 people never wanes.
Bad Uncle have upcoming shows in May for Experimental Dental School and Pit er Pat.
THE LINE UP:
Liz Green (live set)
Liz
Green's music permeates in a carnival land of lost 78's, a black and
white boudoir of glamour and elegance . Her haunting vocal style and
symplistic yet truly enthralling guitar
style have brought her comparisons to Joanna Newsom, yet Green manages
through her Live show to unveil her individuality and wide ranging
influences from grassroots jazz, folk and delta blues.
In October of 2008, Liz was invited by John Cale to perform at the RoyalFestival Hall as part of a tribute to Nico, alongside the likes of James Dean Bradfield and The Guillemots.
Sam and the Plants(performing to Wladyslaw Starewicz animations)
Sam
and the Plants' create minutiae masterpieces of changeful, strangeful
beauty, using acoustic guitars, harmoniums, vintage monosynths and DIY
stringed instruments. Sometimes as solo or with an interchanging band
of followers. Every show is timeless and unique. Their album 'The Eft'
came on Twisted Nerve on the 16th March and they have a number of home recordings available to download from their website.
Fonik (Performing to Ghosts)
Fonik, formed by ex - members of Psychiatric Challenge to carry on the performance and promotion of alternative, experimental forms of music and improvisation. Using made modular synths to create a swirling flux of sonic exploration, taking inspiration from musique concrete to Krautrock to Eno.
For SFTOC they will be performing to 'Ghosts', a creation of short extracts of early films by Thomas Edison which have been manipulated and set to run at extreme slow speed. Films are examined at pixel level and the reult is a collage of swirling greyscale which evolves and devolves over a period of time.
Gnod (Performing to The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda)
Gnod are a Rhythm, drone & psychedelic noise collective from Manchester. The line-up shrinks and swells as the music rotates & expands to reach new frontiers and quite possibly other worlds. Gnod create a mangled jamboree of caveman rythmic pulses, cheek puffing bass, reverb soaked guitar patterns and cosmic keys working together into ine hyper organic being!
Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda is Ira Cohen's 1968 Mylar Masterpiece, and is hailed as the only true psychedelic film.
A Middle Sex (performing to 'Alfred Hitchcock's The Lodger)
A Middle Sex are Karl Sveinsson, Philip Sykes And Matthew Ashworth. Since 2005 they have explored non linear approaches to popular music. With influences ranging from minmial techno, black metal, power electronics and heavyweight dub, A Middle Sex have a huge resource of sound to draw on. With new releases coming up Rayon and Casual Seizures, A Middle Sex are not only ubiquitous but multifaceted with one reviewer describing their music as 'not dissimilar to listening to cut up film soundtracks whilst submerged in three feet of water with a dubstep DJ trapped somewhere inside your head'.
Assuming this be correct, SFTOC finds them the ideal partners to Alfred Hitchcock'sfirst thriller 'The Lodger'. Although 'The Lodger' was Hitchcock's third film he apparently boasted to François Truffaut that it was his first. Featuring Berlin inspired visuals and a splendid turn from Ivor Novello, this bleak take on the Jack the Ripper story is not to be missed.
SoPhIeS pIgEoNS(live set)

'SoPhIeS pIgEoNS' are Samatha Stockdale on vocals, harmonium and percussion; Becky Davies on sax, melodica and percussion; Phil Sykes on drums, percussion and melodian; Sophie Nelson on piano, vocals and percussion.
