We’ve got a long, glittering list of past performers at SFTOC (who you may want to sample on our 10 year retrospective Spotify playlist), but we’re always proud when another one reaches the top. Taken every year, the BBC Sound of… panel uses an expert panel of judges to try predict who are going to be the most exciting new musicians for the coming year. Having played for Now Wave at SFTOC back in 2011, we’re more than happy that Sampha has come in at #4 in this year’s results. Here’s what they had to say about him:
With everyone from SBTRKT to Jessie Ware queuing up to work with him, he even managed to feature on Drake’s hugely successful Nothing Was The Same album. As a result, he was flown out to New York to perform alongside the rapper on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.
Now branching out on his own, Sampha recently released his ‘Dual’ EP to rave reviews.
His distinctive vocals have drawn comparisons to Tracey Chapman and Michael Jackson – two artists he has cited as influences on his own tracks.
